The West Nomads were awesome! They did an amazing job at the screening answering a ton of questions. We were so glad that we were able to host them for a few nights and we hope they come back to SD near the end of their tour.

The Hiding Screening went really well. About 60 students showed up (We had hoped/worked for a bigger audience, but this was 20 more people than last semester). The audience was really engaged, interested, and moved by the film and they were very appreciative of the Nomads as well. We are all very excited for our first meeting after the screening this coming Tuesday - hopefully the screening had a lasting impact on those who attended.

We are going to show Seoul Train and Inside North Korea at the end of March and in April as well as put on another Two-Minute Challenge. More updates to come!

Starting LiNK at USD was such a great experience! There were a few challenges along the way, but overall it was an amazing semester! By having many events, reaching out to students, family, and friends, USD LiNK was able to raise the $2,500 needed to rescue a refugee!

To sum up our fall events: Hiding Screening, Two-Minute Challenge, Fast for NK, Awareness campaign, Inside North Korea screening, Battle of the Bands, and Chapter t-shirt sales

We are so excited to have tied for second place in the Fall 2010 chapter competition. It will be so rewarding for us to be able to send two of our chapter members to visit LiNK HQ this summer!

The 2011 Campaign launched the day of our first meeting this semester and it was so fun to watch the hilarious video with everyone! Tajel, Jackie, and I were able to drive to Torrance the weekend before and be extras! We are so excited for this year's competition & the chance to win a trip to South Korea! image

USD LiNK Battle of the Bands

USD LiNK's Battle of the Bands was a blast! We raised about $300 on donations, raffle tickets, and t-shirt sales alone. A nomad (Sean Hines) and a regional manager (Brenda Abel) were gracious enough to show off their talent at the event! Solo artists and bands performed throughout the evening and we played LiNK media in between each act. Sean Hines won fan favorite and USD's Tolan Shaw won first place.

About 55 USD students and one professor participated in the fast! They donated $3 or more and wore a button to raise awareness. A total of $170 was made today and a lot of people heard about the crisis and LiNK through our awareness campaign.

Six classes raised $342.48 in just 2 minutes! LiNK members made an announcement at the beginning of each class and students generously gave what they had! One student anonymously gave $100. The winning class, who donated $182, received a prize of donuts, bananas, and clementines!

LiNK Love

USD LiNK is a new chapter this fall and we are very excited to raise awareness on campus and in the surrounding San Diego community.

We are hosting a screening of "Hiding" on September 28th! The screening will be a great opportunity to introduce the entire campus to LiNK and the NK human rights crisis. We have been promoting like crazy (emailing professors and department chairs, talking to other student organizations, posting flyers, writing announcements for dept. websites and newsletters) and we will continue to do more the week leading up to the event. We can't wait to welcome the West Nomads to USD and hang out with them on Mission Beach!

About 40 people signed up for our chapter's email list at USD LiNK's table at the club fair and we will be having our first official meeting this Tuesday! We can't wait to hear everyone's fundraising and awareness ideas and to elect our chapter leadership team (hopefully by early October)!

We are planning to do a few events throughout the semester, including a basketball tournament in which we will collaborate with some of the other human rights organizations on campus (Invisible Children & STAND), an open mic night/coffee house possibly co-hosted by a sorority, and the Two-Minute Challenge. We had a garage sale and it was unexpectedly successful! Every little item added up... and donations from neighbors helped too!

USD LiNK is excited to become part of the LiNK Chapter Community and to exchange ideas, advice, and news with other chapters! Please never hesitate to get in touch with us via e-mail or facebook!
